What the Bible Says About Healthy Living: Three Biblical Principles That Will Change Your Diet and Improve Your Health
by Rex Russell
Average Customer Review: 4.9 out of 5 stars

                             SMILES

A doctor, a nurse, and the top executive of an HMO have died and are in line together at the Pearly Gates. St. Peter speaks with them and asks them what good they have done in their lives.

The doctor says, "I have devoted my life to the sick and needy and have had a part in caring for and healing thousands of people."

St. Peter replies, "That's great. Go ahead into heaven."

"And what about you?" The nurse states, "I have supported the doctor and his patients my entire life as an adult, have taken time to explain things to patients, and have helped them lead healthy lives."
"Wonderful. Please proceed in with the doctor."

"And what about you?" The HMO executive says, "I was the president of a very large Health Maintenance Organization. I was responsible for the health care of millions of people all over the country."

St. Peter says, "Oh, I see. Please go on in ... but you can only stay two nights!"

HEALTH-e TIPS

Don't Depend on Antacids
Overuse can lead to health problems.(HealthDayNews) -- Occasional use of antacids is fine, but taking them too often for too long may cause serious health problems.

Antacids may contain calcium, magnesium or aluminum. In large doses, each of these ingredients can cause potentially harmful side effects, warns Dr. Robert Rude, a professor of medicine at the University of Southern California.

Antacids that contain calcium can cause kidney stones if they're taken in high doses for months or years. Antacids that contain magnesium can cause diarrhea if they're taken too often, and they're especially dangerous for people with kidney disease. In these people, too much magnesium can result in low blood pressure, breathing problems and even death.

Taking too many antacids that contain aluminum can results in a disease that causes bones to become brittle and painful.

People who continually need to take antacids should see a doctor, Rude advises.

Brain Exercises. Try these techniques to keep your mind spry.(HealthDayNews) -- Just like your body, your mind needs exercise to remain healthy as you grow older.

One way to keep your brain nimble is to practice a technique called neurobics, which uses your senses to help create new connections in areas of the brain that process sensory input. Done regularly, these simple practices can help keep your mind sharp and ready to tackle new challenges, says a Duke University article.

A neurobic exercise is one that involves the use of one or more or your senses in a novel way, engages your attention, and adds an unexpected element to a routine activity.

Here are some examples:

  • Use your non-dominant hand as you go through your morning rituals such as combing or styling your hair, getting dressed, brushing your teeth and making your breakfast.
  • Close your eyes as you shower and use your sense of touch to locate your soap and wash yourself.
  • Turn the pictures on your desk or shelves upside down.
  • Experience new sights and sounds by going to a new ethnic or farmer's market or bakery.
  • When you travel abroad, immerse yourself completely in unfamiliar surroundings. For example, go to a small town where no one speaks your language, try new foods and stay in a local bed-and-breakfast.

House Plants Can Freshen Air,
Certain types help improve air quality.(HealthDayNews) -- Indoor house plants may do more than bring some greenery to the indoors; they can also help purify the air, according to the Rodale Institute in Pennsylvania.

Motorized appliances such as mixers and vacuum cleaners give off sparks that carry enough energy to fuse airborne molecules of nitrogen and water into formaldehyde, a common indoor air pollutant.

Many indoor houseplants absorb formaldehyde and convert it back to nitrogen and water. The plants that do this most efficiently are spider plants, English ivy, Boston ferns and chrysanthemums.

For an average 1,800-square-foot house, 15 to 18 houseplants in six to eight inch containers can improve air quality, according to a recent U.S. government study.

More bad news about vegetable oils
"...vegetable oils also cause premature aging in millions of Americans. A plastic surgeon did a study in which he examined the diets of his patients and correlated them with facial skin wrinkling.  Those patients eating a high vegetable fat diet had 78% more facial wrinkles and many appeared 20 years older than they were. -
William Cambell Douglass, MD, author of; Eat Your Cholesterol

[Polyunsaturated vegetable oils are promoted as the "good fats" by the mass media and conventional medical establishment. But high levels of these fats are quite unhealthy. They are chemically unstable and highly prone to oxidation. When such oils oxidize in skin tissue, the resulting free radicals
(unstable molecules) damage skin DNA.

GOD'S WORD

Dear friend, listen well to my words;
tune your ears to my voice. Keep my message in plain view at all times. Concentrate! Learn it by heart! Those
who discover these words live, really
live; body and soul, they're bursting
 with health.

Natural Antioxidants The Best

I've been saying for a long time that getting your antioxidants by eating healthy foods is the easiest, most natural way to fight against free radicals in your body and prevent damage from oxidation. Antioxidants are a necessity to every diet because no matter how healthy a lifestyle you lead you will be exposed to free radicals.

So it's no surprise to me a review of research between 1994 and 2002 by the American Heart Association (AHA) found that antioxidant supplements largely have no effect on preventing or treating cardiovascular disease. The lead researcher believes there is little reason to advise patients to take antioxidant supplements to reduce their risk of cardiovascular disease.

The antioxidant studies reviewed fell into three headings:

  • No effect on cardiovascular patients
  • Adverse effects on cardiovascular patients
  • Beneficial effects on cardiovascular patients

The majority of the studies found antioxidant supplements have no effect on cardiovascular patients.

Researchers recommended a diet high in fruits and vegetables are associated with decreased risk of cardiovascular disease, along with maintaining a healthy body weight and exercising. You can also fine-tune your diet so you feel great and have plenty of energy by learning more about your metabolic type.

Pediatricians Miss Childhood Obesity Epidemic

In another case of physicians not spending more time observing, talking to and consulting with their patients rather than prescribing them drugs, pediatritions may be the weak link in the epidemic of childhood obesity.

In 66 percent of the office visits by obese children at a Pittsburgh hospital, pediatricians didn't note a child was overweight, according to a recent study. In many cases, parents and physicians wait for children to grow out of it, one physician said, although even an obese 6-year-old has a significant chance of being an obese adult.

The study was based on a review of medical records of more than 2,000 children seen at the hospital over a three-month period. It found that only 7 percent of pediatricians ordered laboratory tests to screen for weight-related problems, and only 15 percent noted children's activity level and hours spent watching television.

One nurse at the hospital's primary care center noted other nurses didn't routinely note a child's body mass index (BMI), although she knew from observing kids that obseity was a problem.

I've found preventing childhood obesity is far easier than applying treatment options, although much of the success of prevention depends on parental involvement. Setting guidelines and educating children on good nutrition through providing them with nutritious meals and snacks will put them on the road to making healthy decisions as adults.

Here are three recommendations you can use immediately to help your children win the battle over obesity:
