the
MOSES
system
Helping
the older adult achieve quality of life, longevity and
independence through a multi-disciplined, God-centered system of
optimal wellness.
The
MOSES system is a comprehensive health, fitness and wellness
program that facilitates a lifelong healthy and balanced
lifestyle for the older adult (50 to 120). The MOSES system
provides older men and women with an easy to follow program,
which covers all the critical health, fitness & wellness areas
to achieving and maintaining optimal wellness.
Each
program is 12-weeks, and contains Internet enabled
streaming-video instruction for individual or small group
participation – larger groups may be facilitated by a Healthy
L.I.F.E.Coach. The MOSES system integrates biblical principles
with practical, trustworthy health, fitness & wellness
guidelines, and provides all the tools a person needs to learn
to live healthy, balanced lives from a Christian perspective.
The program is an ongoing learning experience that covers both
aspects of basic physical wellness and allows participants to
develop a wellness plan for a lifetime.
Groups
can begin with either the Fitness or Nutrition Sessions. Starter
Kits are available for each of these sessions and provide all
the resources an individual will need to guide them in
developing a wellness plan. Both Starter Kits are included in
the MOSES Fit Plan Kit, which also contains four videotapes with
segments to use in each week's one-hour group session, a
promotional/facilitator training video, and a facilitator guide
(two copies) with step-by-step session instructions.
Participants are encouraged to spend at least 15 minutes reading
the recommended Scripture and applying the principles they are
learning to their wellness plan, utilizing their Member
Workbooks, and to record activities in their Accountability
Journals. In each week's group session, they view the session
video lessons, review and discuss each week's material, support
and encourage one another, and share prayer requests.
Background
As
Olympic marathon runner Kenny Moore says, "You don't stop
exercising because you grow old. You grow old because you stop
exercising." Scientists are discovering that the true fountain
of youth can be found within our own bodies, and enhanced by our
lifestyle choices.
Even
within one individual, organs can age at different rates,
according to the National Institute on Aging. This suggests that
genetics, lifestyle and disease all affect the rate of aging,
and that several distinct processes are involved. The American
Medical Association's Committee on Aging studied the phenomenon
of aging and found that it is virtually impossible to
discriminate between the effects of aging and the effects of
inactivity. Therefore, age should never be viewed as a limiting
factor in developing an exercise program or healthy lifestyle
habits. An older adult who exercises and practices healthy
lifestyle habits, will live a healthier, longer more independent
and enjoyable life.
The
MOSES system is built upon Biblical principles for healthy
living and integrates a Christ-centered foundation as the most
important element of optimal health. Ephesians 3:16b (NKJV)
states “To be strengthened with might through His Spirit in
the inner Man.” Since God works from the inside out, a
God-centered faith is a crucial element in overall health – you
really don’t have one unless you have the other. Our belief is
that physical, social, vocational, intellectual, emotional and
spiritual health operates at optimal levels when a
Christ-Centered foundation is in place.
The
Bible has many passages that can be applied to healthy aging
"whatever a man sows, that will he also reap..." this is true
not only in the spiritual realm, but the physical as well - take
good care of your body, and you enjoy good health, disregard
healthy habits, and the body will suffer for it; "man shall not
live by bread alone..." live involves more than
simple existence, it includes living life in its fullest sense,
i.e., an abundant life, not one that is burden down with
unnecessary and avoidable illness, disease and injury; Psalm 92
states that those who are planted in the Lord shall flourish
“they will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and
green.” Don't you wish to be like that? Consider that,”
Moses was 120 years old when he died, yet his eyesight was
clear, and he was as strong as ever.”
By the grace of God and with
certain lifestyle changes, you can achieve optimal health! The
sooner you begin this new healthier life, the less "baggage" of
the old lifestyle you will have to contend with, and the more
you can do for the Lord...
The
goal of the MOSES system is to improve all the major and minor
components of physical fitness. Many programs for older adults
are designed simply to improve the cardiovascular system. It is
important, however, that strength, flexibility, muscular
endurance, body composition, mental and spiritual health are all
goals of the program, along with the minor components that
include balance, coordination, agility and reaction time.
The
MOSES system is currently under development ... based on solid
information reviewed and endorsed by an advisory panel, which
includes a registered dietician, exercise physiologist
specializing in behavioral adherence, doctor in health education
and human performance, doctor of lifestyle management and
medical doctor of gerontology.
The lifestyle management programs are based on recommendations
from the American Heart Association and the American College of
Sports Medicine.
The
MOSES system also makes a great community outreach program,
providing a vehicle to attract the un-churched who may wish to
participate in healthy lifestyle programs – participants learn a
God-centered program and have a ”soft approach” exposure to the
core ministry of the church.
A
prologue to each of the components of the MOSES system is
outlined herein, providing support dialog for the importance of
each area, relative to older adult health, fitness and
wellness. Facilitator and participant guides will be developed
along with resources for third-party assistance and
Internet-based support tools and program updates.
